Vijaydurga Fort

Vijaydurg Fort is located in Devgad Taluka, dist of Sindhudurga. Vijaydurg is oldest Fort in Sindhudurga District. It was built in 1193-1205 and restructured by “Shivaji Maharaj”. Vijaydurga also known as Victory fort.  Vijaydurga is most popular sea fort of Sindhudurga District. And it was surrounded by Arabian sea three sides . The fort is spread 4047 sq. meter.  




History of Vijaydurga Fort


Vijaydurg Fort was called "Eastern Gibraltar". This fort original name was "Gheria". The impenetrable water body of Vijaydurg is situated on a broad rock on the southern side of Waghotan River. Raja Bhoj built this fort during the region of Shilhar Dynasty between 1193 and 1205. The king of Bhoj built 16 forts and restored some of them. Vijaydurg also included one of them.

C. In 1653 Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj saw the many transmission of this fort till winning this fort. State of Shilahar kingdom Dipped in 1218. C. In 1354, Vijayanagara king defeated the Yadavas of Devgiri and captured the Kokan region. Further in 1431, Bahamani Sultan Alauddin Ahmadshah defeated Vijayangar Raja. During the period 1490 to 1526, the Bahamani Kingdom was divided into 5 pieces. It was handed over to Adlishah of Vijapur in the Kokan region. After that, Vijaydurg lived under Vijapurkar's rule for about 129 years till 1653. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj won this fort in 1653 from Adlishah of Vijapur.

When the fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj this fort was scattered in about 5 acres of area. Because Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had to establish a center in this place, he repaired and expanded the fort Increase the scope of this fort to 14 acres of land area. New beaches were built on the east side.
