Mormagoa Fort


Mormugao Fort located in North of Vasco Da Gama Town and its close to Mormugao Port. It is Goa main Port.

HIstory of Mormugao Port

Mormugao Fort was built by Portuguese in 1624. It was considered as one of the major costal fort and Shield from invasion from Maratha's. The Mormugao Fort covered a total region of six miles in circumference, contained towering bulwarks, three magzines, five prisons, a chapel and quarters for the guard. It had 53 guns and a garrison with 4 officers, and was an important fortress on the western coast.

Though, much to see in the fort is not left apart from a Church and some strong walls. In old days, the Mormugao Port used to be an imperative port.

In 1683, the Portuguese in Goa were in grave danger from the Maratha's. Almost certain defeat was averted when Shambhaji. Suddenly lifted siege and rushed to defend his own kingdom from the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. 

The Maratha warriors continued to attack the town and the fort and finally the Portuguese gave up the township in preference for the Old Goa.

The fort near the internationally famous Mormugao Harbour was built to protect the harbour. Ever since it was accorded the status of a Major Port in 1963.
