History of Reis Magos Fort

Reis Magos Fort was built along with the church. When Goa was ruled by the Sultan of Bijapur - Yusuf Adil Shah. Although it was a small outpost it had very strategic importance. It happened to reach out into the narrowest point of the Mandovi river. Afonso de Albuquerque attacked and conquered Goa in 1510. He made a special note the strategic importance of his small output. He got the feel of the might of a small fortified outpost built by the King of Bijapur, Yusuf Adil Shah, on the southern side of Bardez taluka of Goa. From 1551-1554, during the vice royalty of D. Afonso de Noronha, the Reis Magos fort and church was built at this same location - on steep slope of land, just above the old outpost. from its perch up there, it could curb any ships from crossing through the Mandovi. It was enlarge subsequently on different occasions and finally re-erected in 1707. The fort formerly accommodated viceroys and other dignitaries newly arrived from, or en route to Lisbon, and in the early eighteenth century proved a linchpin in the wars against the Hindu Maratha.

It was occuiped briefly between 1798-1813 by the British Army. It was subsequently abandoned by the military and served as a prison untill 1993.

In 2007, a tripartite agreement was signed between the Government of Goa, INTACH and the Hamlyn Trust to restore and the fort as a Cultural Center. The fort was fully restored under the skilled hands of a renowned Goan Architect named Gerad da Cunha and thrown open the public on 5 June 2012. Now Resi Magos Fort is converted into a cultural center, besides being used a tourist attraction.
