Mandangad Fort

Mandangad is Situated in Ratnagiri District. Mandangad is hilly coastal zone. The Arabian Sea is 35 Km from Mandangad.

History of Mandangad


Madangad is a two peaked hill fort also known by the same name i.e, Mandangad (also called as Chitradurga Fort). Mandangad was built in 12th Centuary during the regin of the Shilhara dynasty. It was built by King Bhoj II. When Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj defeated Kartalbhkhan and was marching towards Dabhol, Mandangad was along the way. After Hearing this news Jaswantrao Dalvi ran away from this fort to Shingarpur and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took Mandangad Fort without a fight. It was held by Kanhoji Angre before captured by British in 1818.

Mandangad and Bankot forts were built to Safeguard the trade through the Savitri River, which was as important trade route. The mazar of Saint Dawood Khan and many Muslim graves are there. A Ganpati temple and two ponds are present inside the fort, The tank is also known as "Thorla Talao" (Big Lake). 

In the past, trade was run through small ships. These ships can be brought inside the river deep. As the river's water is stable compared to the sea, it is easy to fluctuate the material from the banks of the river. Savitri river meets the Sea at Bankot. The river is wide this area. This is why the ancient time of this river trade with foreign trade to protect this trade route, the forts of Bankot and Mandangad were produced.
