Jaigad Fort



Jaigad Fort also called Zyguhr in British records. Jaigad Fort is located Peninsula in Ratmagiri District and 14 Km from Ganpatipule Temple. It overlook a bay formed where Shashtri river enters the Arabian Sea. A jetty port agency and lighthouse is nearby location. 


History of Jaigad Fort

Jaigad fort built by Bijapur King in16th Century. After is pass to Naiks of Sangmeshwar. although Adilshah tried to earn the fort many times, but he dint success. Later, during 1695, Kanhoji Angre had this fort during the Anglo-Maratha war of 1818. This fort was easily found by British. Located on the north side of the village, this fort is surrounded by Arabian Sea water on both side of North, East and West side. The southern Dindi and west thieves can enter the fort through the door. The area spread over 12 acres if area and is still in strong condition. the fort is structured in both the fort and the fort Balakila is the main gate. The fort has a strong fortification made of "Yamba Stone".

The fort has a total 28 bastions and can be looked at by the beauty of the Arabian sea. there are some wells, caves and stone pillars in the fort.
