Mangueshi Temple - Pirol, Ponda

Mangueshi Temple is located in Pirol of Ponda Taluka. In Ancient Time Temple was located in Kushastali is also now called as Cortalim. Temple Distance 22 km from Panjim City and 1 km from Mardol Village. Mostly Tourist visiting also here.





History of Mangueshi Temple


Mangueshi Temple origin from Kushastali (Cortalim) Salcette Village. In 1543 Salcette which fell to the invading Portuguese rule. Portuguese started Christian conversion during year 1560 in Salcette Village. Portuguese destroyed this temple when Salcette added in there territory. In Ancient time Temple was located in Kushastali on the south bank of Zuari river. 

In May,1560 The Saraswats of Vasta Gotra felt in insecure and shifted Mangesh Linga from Khushastali to Aghanashini (Zuari). Portuguese destroyed Temple for establish Church on the same place. However, Temple Shifted from Origin Place to Pirol of Ponda Taluka. After Shifting the original site was so simple. Current structure built under Marathas.

The Peshwas donated this villages in 1739 on the suggestion of their Sardar, Shri Ramchandra Malhar Sukhtankar, who was a staunch follower of Shri Mangesh. After few years it was built, This area too fell into Portuguese hands in 1763 but by now, Portuguese had lost their initial religious zeal and become quite tolerant of ther religions and this structure remained untouched.
